Khao Yai National Park Tour’s Details
khao yai day trip from Bangkok is a convenient wilderness, only 125 miles (200 km) northeast of Bangkok, transport from bangkok to Khao Yai just off the Frinedship Highway (Highway 2); turn off 3 miles (5 km) before the town of Pak Chong. Consequently Khao Yai nationalpark gets about 1.5 million visitors a year. One weekends and holidays, people escape the gasping capital and besiege the Khao Yai national park, so it is best avoided at these times. Van rent from Bangkok to Khao Yai is the best convenient transportation if you have limit time and want to personalize your trip.
Khao Yai’s outstanding natural beauty is also famous for Khao Yai winery. Don’t miss to visit PB Valley Khao Yai, GranMonte Vineyard. To take photo with grape, you should visit Khao Yai winery during February to March when wine grapes are harvested in Khao Yai. Anyway, you can visit PB Valley all year for WINE TASTING TOURS and its restaurant is also highly recommended from many khao yai visitors.
As you would expected from a place called Khao Yai (“big mountain”), the park is generally mountainous, rising from near sea level at its southeast perimeter to 4,432 feet (1,351 m) at the summit of Khao Laem. While mountains in Khao Yai national park the north slope gently to its northern boundary, those in the south and west form a steep escarpment that drops to agricultural plains outside the Khao Yai park. The long wall-like mountain, Khao Kamphaeng, bounds the northeast.
Many of the Khao Yai park’s 13 hiking trails, from 1 mile to 6 miles (1.5 km to 9.5 km) long and originally tramped by elephants, take you through lush tangles of monsoon forest, along numerous streams to tumbling waterfalls, past caves, and up to evergreen rain forests and spectacular viewpoints on the hillsides. High up on the ridge tops, cooler temperatures encourage stands of pine woodlands. Hides take from about 90 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the trail. Many of the numbered trails, with routes set by colored markers, radiate from the Khao Yai park headquarters and visitor center, or the nearby Kong Kaeo Waterfall.
Some routes (numbers 6,7,8, and 9) loop back to, or near, the Khao Yai visitor center. On others, be prepared to backtrack or organize transportation to return to the start point. Some trails are poorly marked or confusing, so a Khao Yai tour guide is really needed. The Khao Yai visitor center can advise on this; it also has trail Khao Yai maps.
The 3-5 mile (6 km) Trail 6, from the Khao Yai visitor center to Nong Phak Chi wildlife observation tower, is relatively easy and one of the most popular, taking about 3 to 4 hours. Easy to follow, Trail 8 is about 1 mile (1.5 km) long, takes 90 minutes, and returns you to Khao Yai park headquarters. Trail 9 (1.5 miles/ 2 km and 60 minutes) is similar. Trail 11, from the old restaurant up to Tat Ta Phu Waterfall, is more testing, This 5-mile (8 km) trek will take all day and follows a stream to the falls, then back tracks (a Khao Yai tour guide is required).
Much of Khao Yai’s wildlife congregates near the park headquarters. Elephants—their numbers estimated at 250-300 are not difficult to spot, nor are the mouse deer and barking deer that congregate in the evening at Nong Phak Chi observation tower. The Khao Yai park’s 50 or so tigers are rarely, if ever, sighted. You are also unlikely to see the leopards, leopard cats, marbled cats, and shy Asiatic black bears.
Khao Yai has tens of thousands of white-handed and pileated gibbons, however. The latter, which generally live in insular family groups, often gather in a unique 6-mile-wide (9.5 km) contact zone around Lam Ta Klong stream.
Other primates include the pigtailed macaque, a sociable, highly intelligent monkey known for its great variety of calls and numerous facial expressions; and the arboreal, nocturnal slow Loris, with its slow-motion movements, brown fur, and large round eyes. There are also Asiatic wild dogs and giant flying squirrels. One of the park’s most amazing sights is the dusk eruption of myriad wrinkle-lipped bats, which fly out from a large cave at Khao Luk Chang.
Guided excursions are the best option, especially if you want to reach deeper into Khao Yai to view wildlife from observation towers in the evening or to climb higher into the mountains. There are Khao Yai tour for wildlife safari at night.
